Camping in Europe
by
dane.kaagman
Camping in Europe represents an ideal holiday choice. As well as providing the opportunity to see the continent at your own pace, camping in Europe is also relatively cheap compared to city breaks and hotels.
While you do have to keep track of more things than a regular holiday, the actual process of travelling and setting up in specific countries, and moving between them, can be straightforward. France is typically the first destination of choice for camping holidays, with regular ferries running from Dover to Calais, and is particularly recommended for families that don\’t want to travel too far. When making a camping trip to France and the rest of Europe, it is important to consider some basic issues, and broader travel options for different countries. General Tips and Supplies It is usually best to travel between April to June if you want to avoid the summer rush. This is especially true if travelling without children. In terms of basic supplies to take with you, camping choices will depend on whether you want to bring a tent or rent one at a site, or if you have your own caravan. Two to four people tents can vary considerably in cost, and it is generally worth investing the money in a tent with high quality insulation, a sleeping pad, and sleeping bags that use down and synthetic linings. Gas stoves, folding seats, headlights and a first aid kit should also be packed for a trip. Caravans and RVs are typically more expensive to park on campsites in Europe, but can be more convenient if you want to move between different sites. Most sites will charge about 5 Euros per tent, and 3 Euros per person, with caravans or attached cars costing around 8 to 10 Euros per night. You also need to check ahead to see if a campsite is child or pet friendly. While many campsites now include Wi Fi, washing and toilet facilities, prices for usage may vary considerably. Campsites that are aimed at touring parties and 18-35 package holidays are also usually unsuitable for young children. Best Sites and Countries to Visit You can be sure to be spoilt for choice when camping in Europe. Some popular sites include the Cote de Azur and the Les Romarins region in the South of France, as well as the multiple campsites of Lake Garda in the North of Italy. Many of the best campsites in Spain can be found in Costa Brava and Costa Dorado on the Eastern coast of the country. For more unusual camping ideas, it is also worth exploring the mountainous regions of Norway and other parts of Scandinavia. Another option is the Netherlands, with UK travellers able to take advantage of ferries from Hull to Amsterdam. The Netherlands is relatively cheap, with most sites costing about 20 Euros a night. Key resorts include Camping De Valkenhof in the Drenthe region, and Camping De Molenhof in Twente, which both appeal to family camping, and have comprehensive facilities.
